EXCELLENT Based on 13 reviews Posted on CocoVerified Remote monitoring lifesaver My husband and I have been using the APAL Hestia IoT Dongle for the past three months to monitor our cattle ranch several hours upstate, where cell service is spotty at best. It connects my GPS collars and soil moisture sensors via LoRaWAN without a hitch, sending real-time alerts to my phone if a herd drifts too far or irrigation needs tweaking. Setup was straightforward (according to my husband who set it up) plugged it into our solar-powered router, and the global exchange feature kicked in immediately for data syncing across borders when we travel. No more guessing games on asset locations and most importantly we’ve cut down on unnecessary trips by half. Overall this dongle is decently reliable and a worthy investment.Posted on David GVerified Solid Dongle for IoT Use Item title: APAL Hestia IoT Dongle – Enhanced LoRaWAN Gateway with Satellite&Terrestrial Connectivity | Smart Monitoring&Remote Asset Tracking | Low Power, Easy Setup | Compatible with Raspberry Pi (Hestia A2-M)Delivered price with Prime: £329.00How is it packaged?: Brown Retail BoxFirst Impressions: Compact, lightweight, and surprisingly easy to set up with my Raspberry Pi.Would I recommend? YESSuitable as a gift? YESMy comments and opinion: I’ve been using the APAL Hestia IoT Dongle with a Raspberry Pi for a few weeks, and it’s been fairly reliable. Setup was simple, and I like that it supports both satellite and terrestrial connectivity. The compact design makes it easy to move around, and the RS-485 interface works well over longer distances. It’s not flawless, but for basic remote monitoring and Modbus integration, it does the job well enough. Definitely a practical tool for IoT projects.Posted on Jonathan LivingstonVerified A serious purchase If you are contemplating this you really should be knowledgeable in this type of thing.A serious purchase which requires serious investigation. So far I can only say that it connects and works with my kit but have not had time to find any flaws.Couple your own searching of the market. It may be not much help me reviewing this as putting my own experiences in a high tech place of kit may not be good.I review a lot of items so for this one it's fair to say it works as described.Posted on Vlad S.Verified Industrial IoT sat dongle with Modbus support, low power use, and seamless off-grid integration. I’ve been building and deploying IoT solutions for a few years now - mostly for environmental use cases in areas where cellular coverage drops off or becomes wildly unreliable. I needed a more reliable backbone for data transmission - something that would work regardless of location, terrain, or the whims of terrestrial infrastructure. That’s when I came across the APAL Hestia A1, which delivers global satellite connectivity in a dongle-sized form factor. At first, I was skeptical. It sounded almost too good for a device this compact. What ultimately swayed me to give it a try was the fact that it followed the 3GPP Release 17 standard for non-terrestrial networks (NTN) and featured a real satellite-compatible chipset (MediaTek MT6825). Add in its RS-485 support and Modbus-RTU compatibility, and it ticked a lot of boxes for seamless industrial integration. I run most of my data collection through a Raspberry Pi gateway, and the dongle is plug-and-play friendly once you add a USB/RS-485 converter. Setup was surprisingly quick. I mounted the unit on the roof of a barn with the included stainless bracket, wired it into my Pi, and pointed it toward open sky as the manual recommended. Within a few minutes, I had bi-directional satellite data communication running smoothly. The first use case I tested was soil sensor tracking across a wide field where no cellular signal reached. I set the system to collect and relay data via Modbus, using CeresGate as the online dashboard. The Hestia delivered. It successfully pushed GPS-tagged sensor data every hour without a single missed interval during my initial week-long trial. It handled poor weather conditions with zero hiccups - something I can’t say about the 4G LTE shields I’ve tried in the past. Even more impressive, it drew very little power, which made it ideal for pairing with a small off-grid solar rig. The included 20KB satellite airtime helped for testing, and data usage has been predictable so far with my polling intervals optimized. What I appreciated most is how modular and rugged this unit is. It supports daisy chaining, handles a decent voltage range (5–24V), and is sealed up to IP67 standards. Also, because it supports GEO satellite communication (Inmarsat L/S bands), I didn’t have to hunt for constellations or fine-tune antenna orientation - it just worked as long as there was a clear view of the sky. That said, this isn’t a plug-and-play toy for casual users. If you’re unfamiliar with Modbus protocol or don’t know your way around serial communication and GPIO pinouts, there’s a steep learning curve. The documentation, while thorough in places, assumes a bit of technical literacy. The included user manual gets the job done, but I had to supplement it with a few online resources to fine-tune my dashboard setup. Also, the 20KB of included satellite data goes fast if you don’t optimize your payload, so there’s definitely a need to be smart with how often you transmit and how much. All in all, this device has been exactly what I needed - a reliable, compact, and flexible way to maintain consistent data transmission in off-grid environments. It feels purpose-built for people working in agtech, marine logistics, or environmental field research. If you understand how to speak its language, the Hestia A1 becomes an incredibly valuable addition to your toolkit. I’ll be buying another for a separate monitoring project on a mountain trail system next month.Bottom line:The APAL Hestia A1 is a compact satellite IoT dongle that delivers reliable, low-power, Modbus-compatible data transmission even in remote, off-grid environments. It integrates easily with Raspberry Pi setups (via RS-485) and supports GEO satellite comms with no need for fine-tuning. While it's not beginner-friendly and requires technical know-how (Modbus, serial protocols), it performs impressively in harsh conditions, making it ideal for agtech, environmental monitoring, and other rugged field applications. Solid product, 5 stars hands down, highly recommended!Pros:1. Reliable satellite connectivity even in remote, no-signal areas.2. Compact and rugged IP67-rated form factor.3. Easy integration with Raspberry Pi using RS-485.4. Supports Modbus-RTU for industrial compatibility.5. GEO satellite support eliminates need for precise antenna alignment.6. Low power consumption, ideal for solar-powered setups.7. Quick and stable bi-directional data transmission.8. Supports daisy chaining and wide voltage input (5–24V).9. Comes with stainless mounting bracket and basic startup airtime.Cons:1. Not beginner-friendly - requires technical knowledge.2. Documentation assumes experience with serial communication.3. Included 20KB satellite data runs out quickly if not optimized.4. Limited plug-and-play support for casual or non-industrial users.Posted on DatChickGrazkaVerified Hestia Dongle I’ve been testing the APAL Hestia A2-M IoT Dongle for a few weeks now, and overall, it’s quite an interesting bit of kit. It’s small and easy to move around, but packed with features – satellite and LoRaWAN in one. Setup was surprisingly straightforward, especially if you’re already used to working with Modbus and Raspberry Pi. The RS-485 interface works well even over long cable runs, and the power flexibility (5V–24V) is a nice touch. The satellite side runs on the 3GPP Release-17 standard, which gives some confidence in future compatibility. I’ve mostly used it for remote sensor monitoring where mobile signal is unreliable, and it’s performed well. I like that you can not only collect data but also send commands back – proper two-way comms. The price is on the higher end at £349, but considering the features, I’d say it’s fair if you have a real use for satellite connectivity. It’s also TAA compliant and made in Taiwan, which may matter for some users. If you’ve got Prime, at least you get fast delivery and 30-day free returns, which helps if you’re unsure whether it fits your needs.Posted on JVerified Feels solid and works reliably This is well put together and feels like a quality bit of kit. The casing’s sturdy and has a nice finish to it, not the usual flimsy plastic. It’s small enough to sit neatly with the rest of my setup without getting in the way, and it doesn’t feel fragile when plugging in or moving things around.Setup was quick and simple. No faffing with hidden settings or installing complex stuff. Once it’s running, it just gets on with the job. I’ve used it in a few different locations now, and it’s kept a steady connection throughout, even in places where the signal can be a bit patchy. What I like most is that it doesn’t demand any attention. It’s low power, stays out of the way, and just quietly keeps things connected in the background.Posted on PrimetreasuresVerified Powerful and easy to use Dongle for smart monitoring This is small but powerful device that adds advanced connectivity to IoT projects.
